About the Political Review

The Washington & Lee Political Review is a peer-reviewed undergraduate academic journal with a clear emphasis on political science and political theory. The Review showcases exceptional undergraduate scholarship and serves as an ambassador to the academic community at large.

The Political Review is a non-partisan journal committed to publishing the academic work students all areas of politics and encouraging civil campus discourse.

Samuel Cook

Samuel Cook is a sophomore from Gastonia, NC majoring in Global Politics and Computer Science and minoring in Chinese language. In the summer for 2024, he participated in the U.S. Department of State’s Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) in Taiwan studying Mandarin Chinese. He is currently a student representative on the Faculty Executive Committee and served last year as First-Year Representative to the Executive Committee.  •  scook@mail.wlu.edu

Nathan DeWitte

Nathan is a Sophomore from Alexandria, VA. He is majoring in Politics and Economics. Outside of the Political Review, he plays on the Washington and Lee varsity baseball team. In his free time he enjoys hiking around Lexington and spending time outdoors.

Akash Abraham

Akash Abraham is a freshman from Las Vegas, Nevada who is passionate about learning politics, economics, and law. He is primarily interested in American and South Asian politics as well as U.S. Supreme Court decisions. He is an Associate Editor for The W&L Spectator, a member of W&L's Cricket Club, and a member of the South Asian Student Association. Outside of academics, he enjoys spending time with friends and family, weightlifting, playing cricket, and watching professional sports.

James Eustise

James Eustis is a sophomore at Washington and Lee University studying politics. He was raised in Charlottesville, Virginia where involved himself in local politics and gained hands-on experience with political campaigns, including serving as campaign manager for a state senate campaign. At Washington and Lee University, he became the Business Manager of the W&L Spectator where he works to ensure the smooth operation of the magazine. In addition to his political work, James works remotely for Sovereign Law Group as a Law and Public Policy Research Assistant.

Kathryn Price

Kathryn Price is a freshman from Richmond, Virginia. She is majoring in Classics and Philosophy with a minor in Law, Justice, and Society. In addition to editing for the Political Review, Price is a participant in the LEAD program, sings in General Admissions a cappella, and is in Alpha Delta Pi.

My name is Frances Tiffey and I’m a sophomore from Charleston, WV studying Politics and History. Areas of political science I’m most interested in is political theory, political behavior, and domestic politics.

Tara Trinley

Tara Trinley is a senior at Washington and Lee studying History and Eastern European & Russian Area Studies. She has a deep-rooted interest in legal history, with a particular focus on the legal complexities of civil rights and political identity in multiethnic states and empires. As a research assistant for the Russian Department and Senior Thesis writer, Tara examines rising ethno-nationalism and the changing status of ethnic minorities in the late Soviet Union and first decades of post-Soviet Russia. With study abroad experiences in Armenia and Georgia as a Boren Scholar and Fulbright-Hayes Fellow, she brings a deep understanding of Russian language and post-Soviet politics to her editorial direction and regional coverage. Tara is law school bound, and loves cooking, rock music, and sharing stories by the campfire.

Xandy Veague

Xandy Veague is a sophomore from Concord Massachusetts, double majoring in American History and Politics with a minor in Poverty and Human Capability Studies. In addition to editing for the Political Review, Xandy is a member of the Jubilee acapella group, Kappa Kappa Gamma, and the General Activities Board.

Mac Malabari 

Mac Malambri is a double major in Economics and Physics at Washington and Lee. He joined the Political Review to encourage his peers to explore politics on a more intellectual level. In his free time, he enjoys running, biking, and being outside.
